Laundry, metaphorically speaking…

I have about 65 loads of laundry to do. Always. I was staring at it today and I started to really think about that laundry. It’s much easier to stare at it then actually do it, and here is what I came up with:

Let’s pretend for a second, that life is a giant pile of laundry. Over here we have the brightly colored , plain t-shirts. There are a ton of them because you wear them almost every day. They are the most flattering. They are the shirts that you want people to see you in because they portray who you would actually like to be…bright, cheerful, and happy. You always wash those first because you know that you will need them tomorrow.

Dark load. The dark clothes are the part of yourself that you don’t want other people to see. You wear them when you are feeling moody, hung-over, or fat, when nothing else seems to fit. You can depend on these clothes to make you blend in to the crowd. They seem to say, ‘Don’t mess with me, bitch.’

Then over here you have the jeans. The jeans are like your friends. Some jeans you have had forever…there are a few tears, but they fit the best, so you wear them a lot. Some are brand new…they haven’t really broken in yet, so they aren’t the most comfortable. They may have the potential to become a favorite pair, or you may realize they are too low cut, so you toss them aside. Others just don’t seem to fit anymore. They are too tight. They are strangling you, you can’t breathe or speak when you have them on…but you hang on to them because you love them so much and pray to God that you will fit them again one day.

And of course there are the socks. The socks are sides of everyone’s personality. Some of them match, some of them don’t. Some of them can be paired together and no one will notice that they don’t match. But you can’t put a red sock and a blue sock together, people will stare and probably talk behind your back.

White load. The white load is your relationship. There are things in it that are still bright and new…they have not been worn too much yet. But other things are old and dingy. There are just some things that you will never get the stains out of, that will never look as bright as they once did. But you keep them. Cause they work. They may not be perfect, but they are yours.

Then there are the comfies. Pajamas. My favorite load of laundry. The comfies are family, home, and love. The flannel pants that have been washed so many times you can practically see through them. You put them on every single night. You depend on them to snuggle up with, to make you feel better when you are sick, keep you warm, and make you smile. You don’t care how you look in them because it does not matter. You are in a safe place when you are wearing them. No one is judging.

They all play a part, piled together on your basement floor. They are all needed, they all serve a purpose on this crazy, if not nauseating, roller coaster we call life. Pretty deep for a Wednesday, huh? I know, I know, I have my moments.

Your friend til the ‘Tide’ turns,
Hot Mama (Get it? ‘Tide’…you know, the laundry detergent? I’m so witty, I can hardly stand myself)

  1. I love the darks, if you note all my clothes are dark, it matches my skin tone and hair color the best and brings out my eyes. I hope I don’t come off as the “Don’t mess with me, bitch” attitude.

  2. Once the “Tide” turns, does that make it another “Era”? (Now let me “Wisk” off to another thought…)

I always love it when I do my laundry and grocery shopping on the same day… then for both meals and wardrobe, I have the widest possible selection. The trick is making so you need both at the same time.

Very deep for a Wednesday, but interesting and identifiable, but about these socks….what am I if I enjoy the fuzzy, brightly colored toe socks? They match, but people still talk behind my back. 🙂 I don’t care, I love my fuzzy socks.

You just have a unique personality then! 🙂 I don’t normally even like socks, but if I am forced to wear them (like during the blizzard) then I always go for fuzzy!

Love it. I think you could add the “oops” load too. When something crazy happens like you don’t check all the pockets and you wash and dry a tube of lipstick. Sometimes your favorites just get trashed, and you need to start over.

Ha! Damn, I wish I would have thought of that! Cause can DEFINITELY relate the oops load to my laundry life.
      Love ya mom!
